Exam checklist
- You sit the inspectors' legal exam as a substantive sergeant once your force confirms step one eligibility under the NPPF. Check the current criteria in the candidate handbook.
- 2027 sittings: 11–13 May 2027 (registration 15 March to 15 April) and 2–4 November 2027 (registration 6 September to 4 October). Check the dates on college.police.uk before you plan.
- The format matches the sergeants' exam: 150 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, taken online, with 140 scored. The pass mark is higher: 65% (91 of 140), and 85% or more is an exceptional pass.
- The syllabus is the Blackstone's Police Manuals 2027: Crime, Evidence and Procedure, and General Police Duties (including road policing). Revise from the 2027 editions.
- Read the College of Policing candidate handbook for the online exam rules (ID, your room and desk, equipment and breaks) and do any system check it asks for well before the day.
- Check the handbook for when results are released, resit rules and how long a pass stays valid.
- Our mocks are original practice questions in the exam format. Check every legal point against your 2027 manual: this site is an independent revision aid, not affiliated with the College of Policing.
