Exam checklist

  • The National Investigators' Exam (NIE) is for trainee detective constables, detective degree holder entry (DHEP) candidates and PIP2 investigators. Your force registers you for a sitting.
  • The NIE runs four times a year; 2027 sittings are expected in March, June, September and November. Confirm each date and registration deadline on college.police.uk.
  • The exam is 80 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, marked out of 70. The 2026 handbook set the pass mark at 55.7% (39 of 70) for the year; the College can change it.
  • The syllabus is the Blackstone's Police Investigators' Manual 2027, parts 1 to 4. Revise from the 2027 edition.
  • Read the College of Policing candidate handbook for the exam rules (ID, room, equipment) before the day.
  • Our 80-question mocks use a 45 of 80 (56%) target. Check every legal point against your 2027 manual: this site is an independent revision aid, not affiliated with the College of Policing.
